So its Christmas...

So it's Christmas. The season of joy and happiness has returned again, as it does ever year. Only this year is a little different. This year, Nana won't be baking any goodies, it will probably be either Daniel or Mom (or both of them) doing that. I'm also working on Christmas Day, which happens to be on a Sunday. I NEVER work Sundays, I'm busy with church nearly all day. Since Christmas is on a Sunday, we're having a combined service at 10.30am, and will probably end around 12ish. I have work shortly after that. Since there's no evening service, I can work and not miss church. A win-win, sort of, because I won't have a lot of free Christmas time.

Fortunately, we never really had a traditional activity to do on Christmas other then open the stockings in the morning, because we open all the presents the night before. The great family gathering has been moved over to New Year's Day because it works out better for them traveling wise. So now Christmas has become a glorious day to honor Christ's birth and play with the new toys.

But this year, there won't be a lot of new toys. Shasta our cat has been having a few health problems, and vet trips aren't cheap. Merry Christmas, we have a healthy cat and a new shirt.

We still have happy moments. After enjoying dinner at Islands, we drove around looking at the Christmas lights. Be careful around Bainbridge - awesome lights, horrible traffic. Everyone wants to see that court, but the road there is um, tight. Traffic was so backed up, we gave up on that and checked out other places. It was pretty cool. :)

My cough isn't so cool, but at least I'm getting better; thanks to prayers and a LOT of vitamin C and our friends' "Super Tonic." It's vinegar with chili pepper juice, horseradish, ginger, garlic and onion juice. It tastes as great as it sounds, but it may be working. At least I hope so. It's annoying to be sick every Christmas season.

There's quite a few presents underneath our beautifully lit Christmas tree, way more then I was honestly expecting. There's also one from my boyfriend. I'm really looking forward to opening that one. ;-)

---Flashback to the ending events of Fall 2011 semester-----

Thanksgiving break was awesome, as Keenan was able to stay down here for a few days. We got him a hotel room, so there was no curfew and we took advantage of that! He got to try a lot of "firsts" down here, like meeting my extended family. o.0 It went pretty well! Everyone got along and no one was killed.

The West Coast Festival of Music was wonderful! Everything sounded perfect! There were a lot of ensembles, bell choirs, instrumentals and choir specials - including an echo choir in the back balcony! After that, I got to run over and help with 1st grade girls with their end-of-the-year party, where they had a ton of sugar AND ice cream sundaes! Very exciting evening.

The next evening was fun as well, Keenan and I got to eat dinner OFF CAMPUS with one of our teachers, Mrs. Dunwoody. We both were in her English grammar class in freshman year. We went to Chipotle, hung out at the mall for a bit and ate mint chip ice cream at Coldstone. That was totally awesome!

The next night was the Christmas Banquet. I wore a midnight blue formal dress, and Keenan wore blue to match. This year's theme was "Toyland" so all the admin and faculty were dressed up as various toys. Such as nutcrackers, GI Joe, dominoes and others I didn't recognize. The dinner was interesting, and the concert Dr Z (aka Dr Zachary) did afterwards was good and funny! His wife came to sing a solo or two, when they had 3 5th grade girls come on stage. Dr Z asked them if they believed in Santa Claus. Like good Baptist children, they replied in unison "No, we don't believe in Santa Claus!" and that's when Mrs. Z started to sing "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" and then Dr R comes out dressed up as Santa Claus! If you've never seen him, he's tall. Son of Gath kind of tall. Perfect for the role, basically. He starts to throw candy out to all the students in the main aud. It was great! The message afterwards was a real thought provoker, about how good God is all year long. After that was a brief op for photos and then dash over to another building to watch "It's a Wonderful Life." That evening was soooooo much fun!

We got our grades back. All are A's, except for a B in a really tricky class. I'll take that. Wish I could have done a little better, but I did my best. And that's the best I can do.

Right now, I'm simply in the middle of an awesome semester at West Coast Baptist College. Well, maybe not the exact middle, we just had midterms two weeks ago. It seems to be flying by so fast! My freshman seemed to drag on, but this one is just going so fast! Thanksgiving is coming up, as well as the end of the fall semester events. Didn't I just get here like a week or two ago? LOL. Seriously though, life's been good. Classes are going well, my boyfriend's birthday went *great* (future blog post, perhaps?), good friends, awesome memories, fantastic preaching, amazing semester. :-)

Birthday Summary

So my 21st birthday was about 10 days ago. As far as birthdays go, it was pretty good. I had a bunko birthday party about a week earlier. In the middle of the week, I got this box from my boyfriend. I wasn't allowed to open it until my birthday, which was in a few days. That instantly made me want to open it right there and then, but I was able to endure. It was SO funny to see how the boys reacted to it! It was about the shape of a DVD cover, but a couple of inches thicker. The boys kept shaking it, and teasingly pretend to somehow harm the package, but nothing happened to it. I waited until midnight (PST) the night before my birthday before I tore it open.

Inside was a beautiful pink heart-shaped necklace with a gold chain (that was tangled from all the shaking it went through! ;-) That got fixed quickly.) There was also a special hand-written letter. :-)

I wasn't able to go out on my birthday dinner with my family that night because I had to work. My coworkers are so perplexed as to why I would choose to work on my TWENTY-FIRST birthday. You see, another coworker had his 21st birthday the day before mine, and he got scheduled to work on his birthday (and I got scheduled to work on mine). Instead of working, he went out to "celebrate". I can see why that would confuse my coworkers. Why didn't I go out and party like how the rest of the world would have done?

I didn't go out drinking because I don't believe Christians should drink. There are SO many warnings in the Bible against drinking. If you don't believe me, read the book of Proverbs. It's in there. Besides, I know I wouldn't like the after-effects, so why bother going down that road? Plus, I've heard it tastes nasty anyway. No big loss. I know I'll be able to remember my birthday better then someone that was drunk the entire time on their birthday.

My family and I went to Roadhouse Grill on that Saturday night, the day after my birthday. It's the same location I went to for my 16th birthday. The place has changed a bit. I remember it being crazy, loud and busy in 2006, but when we went there, there weren't a lot of people. Different economy too. Things change after 5 years. Our table had an empty chair that would have been for Nana, so that was a little bit weird to deal with. Still, we enjoyed the evening and got delicious food. One of the traditions that restaurant has for the birthday person is for the waiters to sing "happy birthday" to them while the birthday person is decked with a coffee filter on their head and a toilet seat liner around their neck. So funny!

My parents got me this really awesome laptop for my birthday (which I am typing this blog post on). I'm still installing programs and moving things over, but everything will be ready when I head back to WCBC this fall. :-D

Last Nana Kay Update

If you're friends with me or any of my family on facebook, you should already know by now that my Nana passed away last Wednesday. Apparently, she died during the night. I'm SOOOO glad that she was a Christian, and knew 1000% where she'd be going after she passed away.

My dad had called, and later texted me the news while I was starting an 8hr shift at work. That made that shift the longest, hardest and worst one ever.

We knew it was going to happen (sometime this year), but we just didn't know when. It was actually a sudden surprise when we found out.

I'm glad that she's not in pain anymore, and is safely in the arms of Jesus. We still miss her, but I wouldn't want to wish her back into all the pain and struggles she was going through here. I love and miss you Nana!

Another Nana update

Hey all. My Nana's back in the hospital again.... the doctors put her on dialysis and combined with Friday's and todays results, they've pulled out 6 and a half liters of fluid off of her. She's able to breathe easier (always a good thing!) I'm not sure when/if she'll have heart surgery for her heart valve. She finally got moved out of ICU to somewhere else in the hospital, so that's good for her. The stress has been a bit crazy in the family, but I think we're doing okay so far.

Nana update

Last week on March 1st, my Nana had to go back to the hospital again for fluid retention in her lungs. The doctors figured out that why she was having her breathing and leg-swelling problems was because her heart wasn't pumping effectively. They gave her an electric shock on March 3rd to get her heart to beating in a normal tempo. Then she had to have a test done on her for a leaky valve in her heart... that was done on 7am Monday (why she had to be transferred to another hospital at 2AM I'll never know). Eventually, she had her heart surgery Tuesday morning (something about a stent and angioplasty - no valve surgery as of yet) She had to rest flat on her back for hours before they let her sit up.

Today, we get a call from the nurse at ICU and after all that, she can come home today! Yay!! :-)

Visit Home Weekend!

College has been great! Classes are off to a good start. Midterms are approaching, and I've got a bunch of tests and quizzes next week, plus a bunch of projects that need to magically get done soon. I gotta admit, during this crazy awesome time, I love the go-home for the weekend option. It'll keep me from going totally insane! This afternoon, my mom, brothers and I drove by the Santa Rosa Plateau - it was really pretty! It was green! (I'm used to seeing dirt, a tumbleweed, dirt, more dirt and rocks at Lancaster ;-) ) Here's a few pics that I couldn't resist taking.

We saw rainbows!! :-D I love the way God made those!

Well, I survived my first semester, woohoo! 17 credits wasn't as difficult that I thought it would be. I have a 5 week break and I'm sure it'll go by quickly - just like the semester!

It's good to be back. I've been trying to catch up with my scrapping - I took quite a few photos while at college. It'll take some time before my memory album for my freshman year is over, hopefully it'll be done in the early summer. I still have another semester to go!

I'll upload some layouts eventually..... they're ready for printing, not posting. Big difference. ;-)

...I'll be away at college!! (West Coast Baptist College in the Southern California desert.) It's been rather crazy busy here, getting ready for college and still enjoying the last few days of the summer. I'll be majoring in music there - I play piano and violin. So we'll see how that works out. I doubt I'll have much internet access, so there won't be very many blog updates for a while.

Finally, after several delays, Nana was able to come back home from the hospital today. She went in on Monday (8-10-09) and was discharged today. (8-15-09)

Courage

Hello everyone. This week has been a bit crazy so far. My Nana just turned 80 last Friday, her sisters were able to visit for the weekend. Today however, my nana had a procedure to remove excess fluid from around her heart. They removed about a pint of fluid and she can breathe so much easier now. Hopefully, she'll be discharged tomorrow, we'll see.

I have a friend's wedding to shoot tomorrow, it better not rain then!

Today, it was raining, hailing, thundering, and oh yeah, did I mention lightning? Yep, I awoke this morning to a nice loud thunder clap. Very unexpected on my part, it lasted all morning and most of the afternoon. The clouds have been blowing away ever so slowly, so it "should" be gone by tomorrow, but the weather people have been wrong before.

So, weather photos anyone?

Fortunately, the downpours never lasted for too long, but still! That kind of thing doesn't happen very often around here!

Sea World - Animals

WARNING: This is a very long post! Here's those photos I said I would post. These are from Sea World (San Diego, CA).

We went to the dolphin educational show first. Dolphins like to eat fish, fish, fish, and guess what? MORE fish! Some of these are from the dolphin show that we saw later on that day.

This is a pilot whale - I believe it's name is Bubbles.

There were a lot of birds there. Here's a white crane that I caught on film- err, memory card.

This little guy here is either a sea lion, or a seal. I can't exactly recall, but it was one of the quieter ones not barking and begging for fish.

I think this photo of an otter is one of the best ones I was able to get - the reflection off that tank is Terrible!!

When we stopped to eat, there were ducks wandering around the area, begging. Yep, a begging duck! I've seen dogs and cats beg, but not ducks!

This BCNH (Black Crowned Night Heron) was intently staring at someone's meal. It was kinda funny!

Alright, I know you've been waiting for some Shamu photos. Well, here they are!

After seeing Shamu, we saw stars! As in starfish!

Aye......... sea turtles.....

Then we saw pinkish white birds - flamingos. I think flamingos prove that God has a sense of humor, just look at them!!

We fed bat rays too. One of them pinched my finger when I wasn't expecting it, they can nab ya pretty hard! It's a very interesting experience, they feel so slimy!

TEA photos

No, not your typical tea party photos. On 4-15-2009, (Tax Day), there was a TEA party at the local duck pond. TEA stood for Taxed Enough Already. I was fortunate enough to go and be able to snag some photos of this unusual event. Not all of these are my best work, but I think it captured a good part of some of the emotions there.

There were some "tea crates" that people were throwing into the duck pond.

We even met a reporter from the LA Times. This here is the article he wrote after wards.

This one made me laugh.

Once we were done going about, we stopped by at Pat & Oscar's and got some breadsticks. Those are SO good, yum!!

All in all, an interesting day.

Flower Power

Hello readers! Yes, I'm still alive and BUSY. Finals are coming up... I don't know whether to dread them or be super happy because it means that school is almost over.

Anyway, last week, my family and I went to Sea World!! It was awesome! Even though I've been there at least once a year for several years in a row, I always manage to have fun. It's been even more fun with a camera and about 16 gigs worth of memory! Bwahahaha!!

I'll upload the animal shots of the various creatures later. Here's a few (ha!) flower shots that I took there. :-)

Happy Pi Day everyone! Today is March 14 (aka, Pi Day).

Nothing much going on here, other then homework and some pie!! For dinner, my mom made an awesome chicken pot pie and for dessert we had apple pie. Mmmmm, it was good!

Yep, today is one of the square root days that I heard only happens nine times in a century.

The last one was five years ago, Feb. 2, 2004.

The next one is seven years away, on April 4, 2016.

Want some irony? Math was definitely NOT one of my favorite school subjects. I guess I'm turning into a nerd... lol.

Friday Review

This week was busy. On Monday, school really started. The community college's website said that school started on Jan 22nd, last Thursday. So I go there then and find that my classroom was empty, and that school started later in two days on the 26th. (on Monday) That was frustrating! Right now I'm taking Accounting, Intro to Business, Multimedia and an online HTML class. So far so good.

Friday's Adventure 1-23-2009

Hi all. Today was a fun day. I went with my younger brothers, Dan & Matt and my Mom to a field trip. We went to the Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad. I was also able to take my camera along, so I naturally took a few.... I mean some..... okay, a lot of photos.

We were on a guided tour guide. This is a homeschool support group, so there were kids of all ages there. The first stop was drums. Yep, drums. La de da.

The tour guide, Jack, talked about how where drums were used, and mentioned that most people immediately thought of Africa, but rarely remembered that Indians (Or rather, American Natives) also used drums for communication. For the record, that was the first group I thought of. ;-)

Being spoiled and accustomed to (mostly) classical pieces ranging from Mozart, Beethoven, Scott Joplin and E.T. Paul (really cool marching song composer), Matt didn't care for it that much at first. Dan had fun just making noise.

But after a while, the kids followed the tour guide beating to different rhythms, and making noises that made everyone either laugh or smile.

Needless to say, I was glad that part was over.

The next part was about John Philip Sousa. There was a lot of brass instruments there, some I had never heard of. That big tuba there? That's not a tuba. That's a huge "Sousaphone". Down there on the bottom rightish behind the big drum is a tuba before Sousa had changed it to make it fit around a person (which is what we picture whenever we think about the tuba)

Down there on the bottom left, that golden horn sticking up there; that's the horn I had never heard of before until today. It's called a baritone. Gee, I thought that was the singing range between tenor and bass.

There was also some clarinets, a bass drum and a snare drum. Oh, and some trombones.

Another interesting factoid I learned was that, according to the tour guide, there were no trumpets in Sousa's marching bands. The trumpet hadn't been invented yet! There were horns, bugles and cornets.

(FYI for the photographers: the white balance may be bad, but its not that far off. The room was painted a strange hue of green)

After we left the Sousa area, we were brought to various other things, not all of which I took pictures of. I did of some though. ;-)

At the store, they had some fun items. Including things that made loud noises which the younger children automatically began to play with. I wonder how the store clerks survive.

Yes, those are clocks. Pretty cool, huh? ;-)

And that was about it. For lunch, we drove to Oceanside, parked by the ocean and ate lunch that Mom had brought in the cooler. Did I mention it was raining?

We looked at the ocean for a bit, then we saw a Metrolink train, and an Amtrak cross by on the train tracks. It was awesome!!! :-D

And that just about sums up my rather long fun day. Now I need to go scrap some photos!!

History Made 1-20-2009

Today, history was made. Mr. Barack H Obama was sworn in as our nation's 44th president, the first ever black president. While I do not agree with everything he says, I can still respect his office, and really stressful job, with Iraq and the bad economy. I hope that things will improve before long.

My First Concert!

This last Saturday was an interesting one. After a few hours of pruning rosebushes, avoiding bees and bugs and smelling roses, my dad took my youngest brother and I to a violin concert. It was at the Old Town Temecula Community Theater. Before we went, my dad looked up to see who these people were who were playing.

The group is called "Interpreti Veneziani", and the instruments they played consisted of 5 violins, a viola, a harpsichord, a cello and a HUGE doublebass! And they all came from Italy! To be honest, it made us wonder "what are real musicians doing in Temecula?" lol.

Anyway, after a quick dinner from In N Out, we arrived at the theater. The music was absolutely beautiful and outstanding. Most of the pieces they played were written by Antonio Vivaldi, but there were some pieces from other composers too. (Arcangelo Corelli, Tammaso Vitali, and Niccolò Paganini)

The guy who was playing the cello made me chuckle. He was shaking his head as he played, and kept glancing over at the big gigantic doublebass next to him, and made funny expressions. I think he must have had a fun time.

The last song before the encore was jaw dropping. I've only started learning the violin nearly 2 years ago (has it been that long!?), and I didn't want to practice afterward because I didn't want to hear myself play. The song, "La Campanella" was written by Niccolò Paganini, and it was, to be truthfully honest, a bit irritating at the first. It was super high, and someone was hitting a triangle, and the pitch made my head ache. But as the song went on, it improved, and the 1st violinist was absolutely amazing. He made sounds come out of that violin that I had never heard come out of one before. It was whistling! His left hand (the one that makes the notes) was up so high, it was going where my bow sometimes goes over the fingerboard!!!! He was sliding the notes, with chromatic scales, and plucking and wow!!! It was awesome!!

The applause was really loud after that song. They played 2 songs for an encore, one of them was Vivaldi's Four Seasons - Summer piece, or at least part of it. They did a splendid job.

Once we got home, we ate freshly baked chocolate chocolate cookies and watched Hitchcock's North by Northwest with the rest of the family. It was a great night.
